I forgot all about this story until last night. Twenty years ago on New Years Eve I woke up with an itch and a little scar on my neck. I went to my mother and asked her what was it. She looked concerned but didn’t say what it was.
As the day went on, it got worse and worse. We went to church for watchnight service and it got worse and worse. Eventually my mother took me to my grandmother’s house which is three blocks away. It was the first time I’d ever seen the ball drop. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. HAPPY NEW YEAR! 1993! The next thing my mother said to me was “Chad, you have chicken pox.”
I was distraught. I started crying and my mother tried to cheer me up by playing with the two wrestling figures I had. I remember it was Hulk Hogan and Virgil.
It wasn’t funny then but its hilarious now. Plus I wound up with an extra week off from school and had a blast during that week with my father which wound up being one of my most memorable times with him.
Oh, that’s awesome, she took you to church to pass on the chicken pox! hahahah! Oh, the Calamine lotion- pink blotches over pink blisters. LOVELY. So glad they now have immunzations for the kids!
Was it the Stretch Armstrong version of Hulk Hogan? I remember one of my guy friends having that.
